1914, CA pumps 39% of national supply

1926 Avila Beach

  • Union Oil tank explodes and catches on fire because of lightening, land is still toxic today

 

1969 Santa Barbara

  • Union Oil rig platform blew out

  • Thousands of barrels spilled into the ocean, leaving beaches and wildlife completely covered in oil

1988 Martinez

  • 400,00 gallons of crude oil leak into San Francisco Bay due to a stormwater release valve left open at a Shell manufacturing plant in Martinez, CA

  • Shell pays $19 million to restore wetlands and marshlands in the bay

 

1988 Guadalupe

  • Unocal oil field pipelines leak diluent (used to dilute crude oil to make passage through pipes easier)

  • 12 million gallons of diluent leak into the Nipomo dunes

  • groundwater contaminated

  • still working on remediation today

1990 Huntington Beach

  • American Trader oil tanker spills over 416,000 gallons of crude oil

  • Kills over 3,400 birds

  • Town of Avila is dug up to begin the remediation process from the oil leak in 1977

 

2013 Anti-Frack Protest

  • Protesters fight against fracking in California, trying to put a stop to current fracking

 

2015 Refugio Oil Spill

  • 24 in. pipe that was owned by House-based Plains All American Pipeline leaks

  • results in 4 miles of Refugio state Beach covered in oil

2018 Measure G

  • campaign to prohibit all new petroleum extraction 

  • measure G defeated 53.63% to 46.37% because big oil spends $8 million in false advertisements to way votes in favor of their companies

 

2019 Kern County

  • Cymric field in Kern County has a surface oil spill, lasting 113 days

  • California fines chevron $2.7 million
